It took three centuries for Artemisia Gentileschi to be universally recognised and appreciated as a great artist. In 1916, art historian Roberto Longhi wrote that she was the only woman in Italy who really knew what painting colour, mixing and other key ideas were.The power of her pictorial vocabulary and her strong character made her an example for the feminist movements which came long after her, however, the fact that she was seen as a feminist artist further delayed her recognition among the great artists.It was not until 1991 that a major exhibition was dedicated to her in Florence, and then at the Istituto San Michele in Rome. These exhibitions, however, examined only her personal paintings. Ten years later, in Rome, New York and Saint-Louis, the Gentileschis, father and daughter, were the subject of an exhibition. However the part dedicated to Artemisia was once more summary and did not give a true overview of the extent of her talent.This exhibition at the musée Maillol invites us to discover, for the first time in France, the major themes and features which underpin Artemisia Gentileschi's work.
